Routine de soins corporels pendant la grossesse : les essentiels, trimestre par trimestre

Skincare routine during pregnancy: the essentials, trimester by trimester

Pregnancy transforms the body, and the skin begins to shift from the very first weeks. It stretches, becomes more prone to dehydration, and often more sensitive.

As the months progress, the skin’s needs evolve, calling for a body care routine during pregnancy that is both gentle and thoughtfully adapted.

A thoughtful pregnancy body care routine can help support the skin’s elasticity and reduce the appearance of stretch marks.

More than a simple aesthetic step, caring for the body during pregnancy is a way to move through these changes with intention, supporting the skin while respecting the body’s natural rhythm.

Here is a simple approach, guided by how the skin evolves, trimester by trimester.

How the skin changes during pregnancy

During pregnancy, the body produces higher levels of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones directly influence sebum production, skin hydration, and the skin’s ability to produce collagen.

At the same time, the skin stretches to adapt to the body’s natural changes. When this stretching happens faster than the skin can regenerate, the collagen and elastin fibers within the dermis begin to break, which is what leads to stretch marks.

While this process is partly genetic, the skin’s level of hydration and elasticity plays a meaningful role in how it responds.

First trimester — building the foundation (weeks 1 to 12)

The first trimester is often the most physically challenging: nausea, fatigue, and heightened sensitivity. Meanwhile, the skin is already beginning to change, it may become drier, more reactive, and more sensitive to touch. This is the ideal time to simplify your skincare routine.

What the skin experiences : Hormonal fluctuations during the first trimester disrupt the skin barrier. The skin retains less water and becomes more prone to dehydration, even if it doesn’t appear dry on the surface.

What it needs: Consistent, foundational hydration, applied regularly to the areas that will stretch in the coming months: the belly, hips, thighs, breasts, and lower back.

The most important rule this trimester: Stay consistent. Applying your skincare every evening after showering, on still slightly damp skin to maximize absorption, helps build a healthy ritual for the months ahead.

Ingredients to look for: Shea butter, jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid, and aloe vera, all gentle, effective, and pregnancy-safe. Our Stretch Mark Serum is formulated around these same principles.

Ingredients to avoid: Retinol (vitamin A), highly concentrated essential oils, and salicylates. These actives can penetrate the skin barrier and are not recommended during the early stages of pregnancy.

Second trimester — deep nourishment (weeks 13 to 27)

The belly begins to round, and the skin stretches at a faster pace. This is the trimester when stretch marks may start to appear, and when skincare has its greatest preventive impact.

What the skin experiences: The dermis, the deeper layer of the skin, is put to the test. Collagen and elastin fibers can weaken and fragment if they lack flexibility. The skin needs actives that penetrate deeply to nourish these fibers and improve their resilience to stretching.

Recommended routine — in the following order :

1. Body serum — apply first
A serum should be applied to clean, slightly damp skin, before your cream. Its lightweight texture allows it to absorb quickly into the deeper layers of the skin, where the fibers need support the most. Key actives to look for at this stage:

  • Centella Asiatica — supports collagen synthesis and helps improve skin repair. Clinical studies have shown its effectiveness in preventing stretch marks during pregnancy.
  • Phaeodactylum tricornutum — a microalgae rich in omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, helping to strengthen the skin’s lipid barrier.
  • Castor oil (Ricinus communis) — deeply emollient, helping the skin retain moisture over time.

2. Nourishing cream — apply on top
The cream seals in the hydration provided by the serum. It forms a protective barrier and prolongs the effects of the actives throughout the day or night.

The sequence : serum first, then cream, is not just a preference. It follows a logic of absorption: lighter molecules penetrate first, while richer textures help lock in moisture.

Frequency: Twice daily. In the morning to protect, and in the evening to support regeneration. Gentle circular massage helps stimulate microcirculation and enhances absorption of the actives.

Third trimester — maintain and soothe (weeks 28 to 40)

The belly has fully rounded. The skin feels stretched, sometimes irritated. Itching is common, a sign that the skin is stretching quickly and lacks deep hydration. This is not the time to change your routine. It’s the time to maintain it, consistently.

What the skin goes through: As the baby’s growth accelerates toward the end of pregnancy, the belly can expand by several centimeters in just a few weeks. Skin discomfort, tightness, itching, even mild burning sensations, is normal and can be relieved with intensified hydration, especially with a rich, nourishing cream like our Stretch Mark Cream, designed to comfort and support the skin during this phase.

Adjustments for this trimester:

  • Increase the amount of serum and cream on the areas under the most tension
  • Apply your skincare with slow, gentle massages, slightly lifting the belly to reach underneath

What truly helps: Internal hydration. Drinking enough water remains one of the most effective ways to maintain skin elasticity, no topical product can compensate for systemic dehydration.

Postpartum — self-care remains essential

Postpartum skin deserves just as much attention. As it gradually returns to its original shape, this phase of regeneration is a key moment to support elasticity.

Continue your routine for the first two months after delivery. Recent stretch marks, still pink or purplish, tend to respond better to topical care at this stage than once they become white and mature.
